The Pillowman

(Damn long story ahead.)

Yay it was great! Watched it on Tuesday 20 Nov 2007. Very interesting and exciting. I wouldn't have minded watching it again. I even checked the availability of tickets but everything was sold out already. So sad..

It wasn't action-packed but it was about a writer whose (rather perverse) stories were acted out in murders of 2 children and 1 girl was missing so many stories were told. I like stories. Anyway, the writer is in custody and 2 detectives are interrogating him. We find out the writer's name is Katurian Katurian Katurian. So funny. Haha.. "My parents were funny people." He has an older brother who is mentally unstable and was supposedly being interrogated "next door". =P So he talks about 2 of his stories which were acted out in the murders.

Can't really remember exactly now. Senile liao.. Anyway, there once was a little girl who was ill-treated by her father. Erm, can't really remember the parts in the middle but it was a short story. The end involved small apples, razors and small "people" who went down the father's throat and cut up his insides. I think. =P Same thing happened to the girl too, but I don't remember why. In the murder, an apple with razors was forced down a little girl's throat.

Second story is one of my favourites. There was a very poor boy who was bullied and despised by the other children because of his poverty but he remained kind and cheerful. One day he was sitting by the river when he heard a carriage coming. (Picture of a dark-looking man in cloak projected on stage, stories in comic book style.) The boy offered the man a sandwich that was meant to be his supper. The man sat beside him quietly and shared the sandwich with the boy. They talked while eating. After the meal the boy saw several dirty empty cages of animals and asked him what animals had been in there. (Don't remember what he said, but anyway,) the man thanked him and said, because you've been so kind to offer me part of your already meagre meal, I will give you a gift. You might not understand now but in time, you will thank me. He told him to close his eyes and the boy did. The man then took out a shiny knife and swiftly chopped off the boy's toes. The boy was stunned but did not scream. He just sat there and stared at his severed toes and foot as the man rode away. And that was the story of the crippled boy of Hamlin.

Did you get it? The man was Pied Piper and the boy was the crippled little boy who couldn't catch up with the other children and was thus spared. Cool..

Afterwards when the writer was put in the same cell as his mentally unstable brother, the brother admited to the murders. And he was marvelling at how the boy had indeed not made any noise when he chopped off his toes. "He just sat there and slowly turned blue!" Goodness.

The Writer and the Writer's Brother.

There once was a little boy whose parents showered him with love. They gave him books to read etc etc.. and the boy started writing very good stories, about little pigs etc etc.. The first part of the parents' experiment had worked.

The room beside the boy's bedroom had always been locked and the boy never really paid much attention to it. One night, when the boy was 7 years old, he started hearing drilling noises, hammering etc and a muffled screaming of a little child. The boy had a terrifying sleepless night and when morning came, he asked his mother what the noises were. His mother told him that it was all his vivid imagination. He asked his mother if all little boys heard such noises at night and his mother told him that only the most gifted little boys do. So the boy was pacified and continued to hear such noises every night. And the boy's stories got darker and darker.

When the boy was 14, he won a prestigious writing award. One day at home, he saw a paper slipped out from the locked room. It read, for seven years, mum and dad have been torturing me every night. You don't write about little pigs any more, do you? Sign, your brother. And the note was written in blood. The writer knocked down the door to the locked room and saw his parents sitting on a bed, smiling, and a jar of pig's blood beside the bed. His father made drilling noises and his mother made muffled screaming like a child's. The second part of his parents' experiment had worked too.

The boy grew up and left home. After he published his first story, he decided to visit his childhood home. His room was exactly the same, he remembered his toys and books. Then he went to the room where he remembered how his parents had made horrifying noises every night for seven years to inspire him. But on the bed, under the blanket, he found a skeleton of a boy, neglected for several years. In his hand was a story written in blood. The boy read the story and the story was better than anything he had ever written. He burnt the story.

And then I got lost. Oops. I hate that I'm so easily distracted.. Anyway after that part, which was an unpublished story that he wrote, was what actually happened.

When the boy was 14, he broke open the lock and went into the room and found his brother. Disgusted with his parents, he smothered them with a pillow.

Back in the cell, the mentally unstable brother asked the writer to tell him stories to distract him from his itching butt. (Ha..) The brother's favourite story was The Green Pig.

The Green Pig was always teased by the other normal pink pigs but he was happy to be peculiar. However, the other pigs and the farmers were very annoyed with him being so strange. He was bright green, sort of like neon green. One day, the farmers could take it no more and forced the Green Pig into a bucket of paint in the colour of normal pink pigs. The paint was a special paint that could not be washed off and could not be painted over. The poor Green Pig squealed and wailed and prayed to God to help him, that he was happy to be just a little peculiar. Finally the ordeal was over and the farmers were happy with the Green Pig being pink and normal. The other pigs laughed at him. The Green Pig, who was now pink, was very sad and couldn't figure out why God did not save him.

That night, as all the pigs slept in the field, the sky rained. But the sky rained green paint and it was special paint. It could not be washed off and could not be painted over. When morning came, the pigs were horrified to see that they were now green. Except the Green Pig who was now pink because he was painted in special paint that could not be washed off and could not be painted over. The Green Pig, now pink, smiled and thanked God that he was still peculiar.

Ok, last story. The Pillowman. The Pillowman was made of pillows. He was big and soft, and his head was a big circular pillow. The Pillowman had a very important job. When children are upset about life, the Pillowman goes to them and tells them how to commit suicide and make it look like an accident. Ok, this part is a little fuzzy to me. But anyway the Pillowman also tells them about their sad lives ahead of them so they do want to end it and so the Pillowman helps them.

But there was this happy little girl that refused to believe the Pillowman who told her about her sad life. The Pillowman tried to convince her but she was too happy to listen.

One night, when the little girl's mother was not home, a man came into her room. She pleaded with him to stop. But the man came every time her mother was not home. When the girl was 21, she asked the Pillowman, why didn't you try harder to convince me? I tried, but you were too happy. I was never happy. And she turned on the gas in the kitchen.

Actually, there's another story that Adrian Pang's character told. It's not quite relevant but it's very funny, the way he told it. It's quite an intriguing story.

Oh there's one more story. There was one child who was missing, right? When the writer found out his brother was responsible, he smothered him in his sleep to spare him the terror of execution and confessed to all the murders in return for the cops' promise to keep his stories will his case file, to be released 50 years later. The brother said he had acted out the story of The Little Jesus on the missing child.

Basically it's this little girl who insists that she's Jesus and got on the nerves of her foster parents and let her go through what Jesus did - crown of thorns, crucifixion, and buried alive in a coffin. Each time the foster parents asked if she still wanted to be Jesus, she said, yes, I do. Before they put her in the coffin, they asked again and she said, no, because I fucking AM Jesus! Haha.. But on the third day in the coffin, a man walked past her buried coffin and did not hear her scratching.

The brother had told him he buried the girl at the wishing well where he had buried their parents. When the found the missing child, who was mute, she was covered in green paint and was with some piglets in the well. Ha.. But the writer was still sentenced to death for the murders of his parents even though they figured out he didn't kill those children.

At the end of the play, when the writer was shot, he added a "footnote" to his story:

On the night before his parents were to torture him for seven years, a boy was visited by the Pillowman who told him what was going to happen - the torture, the murders, his death in the cell. The boy thought about it and said, if my parents did not torture me, my brother would not be able to write those stories, would he? I think I'll really enjoy my brother's stories. And he decided to stay.

Rearranged

I think the black line was really irritating so I moved stuff around. Hope this is better. One of my students did very well =) and the other didn't do as well, only a little better than her prelims. But both of them got A for their math so I'm quite happy about that. =P That might mean his mum would want me to teach him math next year even though I don't want to teach him science. (I taught him math and science this year.)

*edit: I just thought of something. Since the boy did rather well, his mum might let him postpone tuition even further. They still owe me 6 lessons' pay!! Urgh. Disaster in disguise... =P

Pillowman coming soon...

Say a little Prayer...

It is now less than 11 hours to the release of PSLE results...keeping my fingers crossed... Shit, hope they...well, didn't do badly. =P I know the girl screwed up her English papers because she made a mistake in labelling her questions in Paper 1 and she was so upset she couldn't concentrate on Paper 2. And her English isn't that good to begin with. Erm, I hope there were a lot worse students who took this exams too. =P

Will blog about The Pillowman very soon! XD

X'mas is a-coming...

I like my blogskin now. =) sorry about that dumb strip of black. It's supposed to be the division between the profile column and posts column but I shifted stuff so I can put bigger fonts. Anyone knows how to add colour background behind the text? I've tried everything I know.. which is quite limited in the first place. =P At least I managed to change the colour of the text. But I'm still annoyed. If it's really annoying to you, please let me know..

Anybody knows where I can buy decent, not-ugly, not-auntie foldable umbrella? I accidentally left my black Espirit umbrella on the bus the other day. Called the interchanges at both ends but couldn't find it. =( On Saturday I walked all over AMK Hub trying to find a decent foldable umbrella and the only ones I found were the not very pretty ones in NTUC Xtra. Because it was pouring, and there was no shelter to the French school I was going to, I bought the Giordano long brolly. I was already late for class. And, when I reached Newton, the rain had stopped and it didn't rain the rest of the day. Now isn't that great? I was late and bought a brolly for nothing. ^@#*..

Ok, enough complaining. I think my French class is very fun. Heh. Teacher let us play game for almost an hour to familiarise ourselves with numbers. We played in 2 groups of 6 and 7. Each group has 6 die and everybody takes turns to roll the dice. No. 1 is 10 points and no. 5 is 5 points. Everything else is zero points, except for triplets and "royal flush". You keep the die that have points and can choose to continue rolling the rest for more points or stop to keep your points. If none of the die u roll have points, you lose your previous points and get Zéro points. At every roll we're supposed to announce our points in French.

Our group kept rolling till we got zero or had really high points. But most of the time we had zero. Ha.. It didn't help that everytime the teacher came by she was urging us to continue rolling. Ha..

I kept getting my die on the floor. Hey, that little thing supposedly a table attached to the chair is small.. And my hands are small and the die are big so I have little control. =P The (pregnant) lady (who's married to a Frenchman) beside me said the next time i dropped the die I'm disqualified. Ha..oops. Cos I did drop again.

I remember I enjoyed my Elementary 1 Jap class too but Elementary 2 wasn't as fun. Not because it was more difficult, but the "atmosphere" of the class wasn't as fun. Because the people were different? So sad.. But at least I like French a lot more than Jap. Teacher didn't ask why I'm learning French. I was going to say because I played the French Horn. Ha..

Au-revoir~ Bonne nuit~

I am happy now because...

it is raining heavily now. Yay. I like the smell of rain, especially at night.

Scary thunder...

The thunders are super loud today.. Oh I'm happy because I finally got my name in Facebook changed after I emailed the people at Fb. Finally... At least their response was quite quick. I like my tarot reading for today..

Justice

Justice represents the balance in life between right and wrong. It is a reminder that you are accountable for your actions and you must be prepared to accept the consequences of any misdeeds. You have been given the strength to fight injustice in everyday life, so bring balance back into the world around you.

I should go study law now. Ha..

I just heard in the news that the taller you are, the higher the chances of you getting cancer. I don't mean to be mean but, haha.. But I don't really mind getting cancer lah. At least I'll sort of know when I can expect to die. Better than just suddenly dropping dead and having no time to enjoy the last of my life. My 'idol' is Anita Mui because she passed away at the peak of her career. She found out she had cancer and decided to not get treatment to prolong her life. I probably would do the same thing unless I have something really important to live for. But I think hers was the best way to leave.. And today, November 1st, is the Day of the Dead. =)

Is looking young a crime?

Ohoh! I'd seen the recent Motorola ad several times. I was playing my (beloved =)) psp and looked over at the tv when they were showing the "users" talking about how much they liked the product and I realised the girl is Huihan! She looks the same, yet somehow different. Or different yet somehow the same. =P Look older..sorry, more mature. =P Wonder what she's doing now. Are people looking more mature or just that I haven't seen them for a long time?

Just now at the NUS library, I was at the loans desk and these 2 guys were talking about my library card, I think. I was listening to my mp3 player so I pretended I didn't hear them. They were talking about the "new" library card looking different. The library card is blue, the matric card is white and orange. Afterwards it occurred to me that maybe they thought I was a freshie, thus the "new" library card. -_-" Unless there really was an older version of library card.

Sigh....

Just watched Armageddon... (Yay Bruce Willis =))

I love the combination of orchestra and rock in this mv. Why must they replace Bruce Willis's face with his? I remember Chris said Liv Tyler was crying in the mv because he is so ugly. Haha.. But it's a great song. The music for the part where the bomb went off reminded me of the part where little mermaid gave her voice to Ursala. (Just watched that recently too.) Let's see if I can find that video...

Here it is. Ends a little too abruptly though.

This is quite funny. Ha..

Yes..I do like the scene..
The Armageddon scene:

Somebody made a video tribute to Bruce Willis's and Billy Bob Thornton's characters, erm making them a gay couple. Ha.. Watch it if you want..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53rz9UFiQY4

Stamper and Truman are not 'really' a couple, so don't get all flustered (or your hopes up) if you think they are. Most professional slash fans don't need this told to them but apparently I gave people too much credit when I thought I wouldn't have to explain this. lol. I made this because I wanted to do something different. Stamper/Truman is one of the most un-thought of couples in movie history and I happen to fancy them at the moment. I love the song thus voila, fan video made.

My Idol

I was looking for Pinky and the Brain pictures online and I came across this:

I had previously seen a video of him as the voice of Yakko from Animaniacs and Pinky so I recognised him and I guessed the other cartoon characters must be those he voiced. And I like those characters too! =)My fav ninja turtle is Raphael and the fat kid from Jimmy Neutron is very funny. But the others I either don't watch or I can't remember them. But 4 is enough to be my idol. Ha.. You can read more about him here.

This is the video I saw of him. You can skip the first minute. It's kinda boring.. I cannot believe he knows the damn song by heart! Zai... Actually my dream job is anything to do with animations or cartoons. Has been so for several years now. I think it's very fun to be voice actor for animated characters.. Can act cute. Haha.. But anything to do with animation I'll be very happy doing. And so, I'm going to be teaching for a few years to earn the $20k animation course fee and one year's living expenses.. Hopefully in 5 years' time I'll be living my dream and working for Pixar or Dreamworks. Ha.. Enjoy Rob Paulsen's "performance"...

Feels a little weird not having tuition with the kids this week. But it feels great to have free time. =) I watched I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry on Monday and I loved it. Very funny, very touching... I think it's my favourite Adam Sandler film thus far. Least favourite has to be Click. Didn't really like the duck thing... Anyway Chuck and Larry is really good. I wonder how many in the film are really gay. The only real gay I saw was Lance from N'Sync.

Do read this:

http://miyagi.sg/2007/10/repeal-s377a/

and sign the letter... I forgot how I found out that homosexual acts are illegal here but I remember it was only recently. I was very surprised. Anyway it's dumb. A lot of people would be in jail if it were enforced strictly.. Rt overheard 2 guys talking about the "acts" when we were doing project at Katong Park. Ha..

Last Sunday after tuition, at the bus stop, this woman beside me suddenly asked me if I believed in the Bible. I believe in God, I don't believe in the Bible. (I certainly would not believe you.) She said the Bible is like a father writing a letter to his son. I corrected her. The Bible is more like, according to her definition, a father telling somebody to write a letter to his son. He doesn't have much control over what that somebody writes in that letter, how much truth he puts in that letter. She then said the Bible was written by 40 (I forgot how many exactly) people of different backgrounds and ages blahblahblah so it's very trustworthy blahblahblah.. Then she wanted me to go church then they teach me for free, because they also learnt it for free, and I'll have nothing to lose. I told her I'll lose time. Haha.. She can't outtalk me on this. I've had too much practise.. Does my face scream SAVE ME?! Or does it say I am gullible. I have a weak mind. I will believe anything. I walk in NUS also have people asking if I go to church. Go away already. I definitely want nothing to do with narrow-minded people. That woman even said something about the Bible is scientific, and talked about the issue of the Earth being round. Weren't scientists accused of heresy and persecuted in the past? If they want to say that it didn't happen and that not all historical accounts are reliable, I can say the same about the Bible. There's no end to this. If people don't believe, just leave them alone. Go away. Shoo.

RIP

I just finished reading a book and my student spoiled my mood by sms-ing to complain about the amount of homework I gave him. .... He had ample time to do them, I bet he was playing the rest of Friday, dunno what he did today, and Monday is the very last paper of PSLE. Excuse me, you want to finish the work next year issit?

Anyway. I just finished reading The Five People You Meet In Heaven, by Mitch Albom. My student wanted to read the book after we did a close passage and I mentioned I know the book the passage was from. The passage was about a boy being abused, emotionally and physically, by his father. Apparently my student is as sadistic as ahem, wb. Ha.. This student is the other P6 girl. I keep telling her she wouldn't understand the book but she insists on reading it. The book isn't what she thinks it is, I'm guessing. I puke blood trying to explain to her what "metaphorical meaning" is, so I really don't know if she'll appreciate the book. Anyway the book isn't really that deep. The cynic in me wonders if there're so many coincidences in reality. But the coincidences weren't known to the people involved so maybe we don't realise there are that many coincidences around us. So at least she wants to read something. Kept telling her to read more because her English is really bad and erm, just not very bright. Reading smartens right? I'm going to dump a bunch of books at her place for her to read before we continue tuition next month...

Days ago, sorting through newspaper articles at work, I read about this little girl who altered her PSLE score of 152 to 252 to lie to her parents in 2001. (Or 2000.) When the posting came and she was put in Normal stream, her father called the school to ask how come she was put there and in the meantime, she jumped out of the window... Apparently she was very happy and not at all upset after she brought the results home. She must be really innocent to not think about it.. The creepy thing is that the father said, when the girl was younger, she used to cry a lot and the medium they consulted had told them that she would stop crying at 12. It was a month from her 13th birthday.

It reminded me of my primary school friend whose sister fell when climbing on their window grille and eventually passed away after being in coma for days. After that my friend told us that her mother had their fortunes told long time ago and the fortune-teller told the mum that the sister had a red dot on her head and was a goddess or something reincarnated and would return to heaven at a very young age. I think she was 6 or 5 at that time only.

And then there was my schoolmate who committed suicide after PSLE. It had nothing to do with PSLE I think, cos the results were not out yet. It was said to be because she played bi xian with some other girls. That's why there were 3 holes on her neck. Erm, we were only 12 so information not very accurate ba. My friend lived near the place where she jumped and she said the mother was wailing and crying very late into the night and the body was in a very awkward position. After that somebody said friend's mother's friend's neighbour or something or the other, said she saw somebody helping the girl jump. ... But her classmates said she had been contemplating suicide for a while. She burnt her autograph book weeks before she jumped. The day she jumped, my friend, her classmate was with her. The girl drank detergent to kill herself and my friend drank with her as well. Obviously they didn't die from it and then my friend just went home. The girl then went to a random flat, threw her bag down and jumped. That friend ah... (Wb, she's e one with the crush I told you about on your blog.)

Reading the book, I wondered if she'd thought about who would be thinking of her after her death. If she'd think that it would be me thinking of her 11 years later. She obviously didn't think of her family when she jumped. The family requested that the newspaper not run the story because they didn't want her grandmother, who doted on her, to find out. They lied to her that she went overseas to study. I wonder how they let her know eventually.

Kiddy Day

Happy Children's Day!! And today is the 3rd anniversary of the loss of my beloved nokia 8310. Let us observe a minute of silence.

...

I was considering putting many dots so u'll need to scroll down for a minute. Ha.. But that was my favourite phone loh. The most expensive and gave me the least trouble. And my first phone too. Even the crack on its side made it look good. Ha..

I don't remember what I wanted to blog about.. Anyway hope my students will do well in their PSLE. I have tuition everyday this week, some days twice and Wednesday thrice! Have to take time off work, otherwise can die..

Insane. Unhinged. Demented.

I sometimes feel like I'm that doctor and my students are Yakko, Wakko and Dot. !!! Super pek cek! Ha..

Doc: What's on your mind?
Wakko: My hat?
Doc: No, that's on your head. What's on your mind?
Wakko: Oh I got it! My hair!
Doc: Your hair is on your head. This is hair! This is hair! (pulls out a bunch of hair) It is not on my mind, it is on. my. head!
Wakko: No, it's in your hand.
Doc: ...!!

I have too little hair to pull out. Ha.. My student recently found a white hair. Actually his friend spotted it and told him. And he was whining about it as usual. Kept asking me to find it for him so he can run to the mirror to see it. Boy's hair is short loh. So he keep losing it and running back. It's funny and quite annoying. Ha.. I threatened to pull it out so he left me alone.

2 weeks of mad tuition rush...

Cuteness

This is damn damn damn damn cute. =) Buttons and Mindy from Animaniacs.

Mindy very cute. Doesn't really look like girl though. =P If I have to take care of her I'll have a heart attack too. She always says "OK I love you bah bye!" So cute! And she calls her mum "lady". Ha.. This one has a cuter ending:

Okayy I love you bah byee!
Have you heard about Captain SMRT already? Sorry I don't read papers. But Hossan and Maggie were talking about on Power Jam and Mr Miyagi blogged about it. (http://miyagi.sg/2007/09/who-wants-to-be-a-superhero/) Damn funny. Got this from his blog:

Animations Galore

Wakko is so so cute. =) His voice reminds me of somebody but I can't remember who. Hmm.....

I like the ending of that. I wanted to get www.dot.blogspot.com but it's been taken. And abandoned for years! Boo. And wordpress requires at least 4 letters. Sigh.

I feel like watching all the cartoons I've watched and liked.

Animaniacs
Tiny Toons
Looney Tunes
Anastacia
FernGully (My kindergarten teachers took four of us to watch the movie. =) Of course I was one of them. Four teachers chose one each. Blatant favouritism! Ha..)
Little Mermaid
Aladdin (All)
Cinderella
Sleeping Beauty
Bananas in Pyjamas
Talespin
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Conan the Adventurer
Captain Planet

and all those on the right of the screen. Basically any animated movie I like to watch. Except anime. I don't dislike them, I'm just not interested in all of them. Not interested in Final Fantasy, thank you.

Remember singing this in St Nicks for some assembly thing.. And Fiona telling me to sing louder... (...)

I don't understand either, but I remember. =P

I just watched Anger Management. Damn funny. Ha.. This my favourite scene:

After which I felt very much like watching West Side Story. Ha.. And found the film (?) version. Quite cute too.

I still prefer Adamn Sandler's rendition. =) More people feeling pretty:

Little Mermaid is the prettiest.

Was a bit high from watching Animaniacs in office on youtube yesterday. =P They are so cute. So funny. Wanted to rent their DVDs but as expected, the store didn't have so I got Anger Management. Missed it on Ch5 last year because went Bangkok. Oops, been a whole year. Animaniacs cured my depression. Okay, not quite. More like obsession shift. Aiyoh the book got me depressed for two weeks. Actually the book ending a bit anti-climatic. But something else was too much of a distraction.

Anyways,

Animaniacs is damn cute. =P

This is "Goodnight Everybody":

In case you didn't watch it, Yakko says Goodnight whenever somebody says something "rude". Reminds me of the time I always say Good Morning. =)

Yesterday the girl from spectacle shop called me to tell me my specs are ready and that she would be "tomorrow", which is today. Ahem. The back story is that I went on Monday to collect my specs and the guy took about...45min to adjust the nosebridge thing and shorten the uh.. the only thing on the specs that can be shortened lah. Most of the time was spent adjusting the nose pad 'cos I keep telling him the left one is too close to the eye. He adjust adjust, still too close loh. But he said it looks parallel. Then finally adjust till it's comfortable for me and he also think is parallel then I asked something about the "stick-thing" and he explained something about my temple very short so have to shorten a lot etc etc and then he adjusted the stick-thing. Alamak. So the nose pads not balanced again. When he tried to adjust it again, he accidentally cracked the lens. Thank you very much. I ended up 40 min late for tuition and didn't have my spectacles. But I wasn't angry lah. Not urgent to get the specs and the place is not inconvenient from work. I was just glad it wasn't the lame-o guy whom we met when I bought the specs. That guy is really..............not funny. Anyway that girl obviously knew what happened and was very amused. =P I think that guy said something about his first time tending to customer and took so long. So maybe he's new. Really very long... But when the girl checked my eyes it took quite long too 'cos I'm very troublesome so partly my fault too lah.

Good Morning!

(I had my hair cut at Twister at Hougang mall today!)
